One of the key pedagogical concepts underlying the new MATATAG curriculum is pedagogical translanguaging, or the activation of all the resources multilin-gual learners bring to the classroom to enhance their learning experience. Research has shown that Filipino teachers often use translanguaging as a default mode in their English classrooms (Parba, 2018; Perfecto 2020; Suarez, 2021). These findings are consistent with other studies done abroad where such an ap-proach is done surreptitiously or with some degree of guilty feelings on the part of teachers (Anderson and Lightfoot, 2018; Cenoz, Santos, & Gorter, 2022). Moreover, the adoption of translanguaging strategies by Filipino teachers is neither deliberate nor systematic as teachers lack appropriate training in the use of translanguaging as a vital part of classroom pedagogy in multilingual contexts.
Objectives:
In order to address this, research has emphasized the importance of conducting teacher training programs. These programs can promote greater awareness re-garding how teachers can encourage students to draw on the full range of their linguistic repertoires to address learning gaps (Ascenzi-Moreno, 2017; Gorter & Arocena, 2020). As such, it is the aim of this teacher training program to systematize and train teachers in a more deliberate use of translanguaging pedagogy as a means of developing and improving students' concept-learning and engagement.
